2009 Appeal - Paddock Paradise

The League has always managed the horses in its care as naturally as possible. Experience has shown that Equines do better when they live outside in groups, with access to shelter and fresh water. Stables are only used for sick or injured animals or for elderly ponies who need somewhere warm to sleep during the long winter nights. We would now like to take this concept forward and create a Paddock Paradise system in the Oaks field.

Can you help us turn this dream into reality? Any gift you feel able to make will be very much appreciated.

Paddock Paradise was developed by farrier and Barefoot Trimming pioneer Jamie Jackson based on his observations of wild mustangs. He noticed that horses living wild seldom suffer from common hoof problems such as lameness, laminitis and navicular disease. Jamie used this knowledge to developed Paddock Paradise. Different surfaces such as stone are introduced into the pasture. Carefully placed fences help to promote natural herd behavior, as the dominant horse keeps the group moving round the whole field as they graze. This allows their hooves to wear naturally, reducing the need for trimming. The result is healthier, happier horses with well-balanced hooves and fewer problems with lameness who enjoy a more natural lifestyle.
