The National Equine (and smaller animals) Defence League The League was founded in 1909 to campaign for better working conditions for Pit Ponies and other working horses. It soon expanded into helping animals of all kinds. Through the League's efforts, Pit Ponies were allowed to retire and enjoy their last years in comfort. Its members also helped to improve conditions for dogs and cats by starting Carlisle's first Veterinary Clinic for the pets of people who were unable to afford treatment for their animals. Almost 100 years on, the League continues to help animals through the Animals' Refuge, at Oak Tree Farm near Carlisle. The Refuge is home to Horses, Donkeys, Sheep, Cattle and Goats and provides a temporary haven for Dogs, Cats and other small animals awaiting new homes through the League's Adoption Programme. Oak Tree farm also incorporates Blackburn Wood, which is managed to provide a haven for wild animals and birds. This work is only possible through the support of our members and friends. Oak Tree Farm All are welcome at the Animals' Refuge, Oak Tree Farm to meet our residents. The farm is situated in the rolling countryside of Cumbria giving the idyllic setting for a family day out. Our site is fully accessible with tea room, shop and free parking. Oak Tree Farm is open to visiters Monday to Saturday 9.30am - 4.00 pm all year, excluding Bank Holidays.
